Vivienne Drops Pitt From Her Name With Court Approval: Fourth Jolie-Pitt Child to Change Surname

A judge in Los Angeles County, California, approved a name-change petition on November 2 for Vivienne, the daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. According to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly, the 18-year-old's legal name has changed from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. The petition drew no objection, and the reason listed in the filing was "personal." Page Six first reported the approval, and follow-up reports by entertainment outlets on November 3 set off wide discussion on social media.
According to the November 2 minute order reviewed by Page Six, Judge Virginia Keeny, presiding at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, read out the approved name-change petitions at the hearing; the order states, "There being no objections, the petition for change of name is granted," and says the decree has been signed and filed. Vivienne first filed the petition on July 20, eight days after she and her twin brother, Knox, turned 18. Her attorney, Peter Kenneth Levine, appeared remotely at the November 2 morning hearing.
Vivienne has publicly used her mother's surname for more than two years. In May 2024 she was credited as "Vivienne Jolie" in the Playbill for the Broadway musical The Outsiders, which she helped her mother produce; the show went on to win a Tony Award.
She is the fourth of Jolie and Pitt's six children to legally drop their father's surname. Her sister Shiloh was the first, filing on her 18th birthday in May 2024 and winning approval that August; she is now Shiloh Nouvel Jolie. Her brother Maddox's change took effect on September 14 this year, making him Maddox Chivan Jolie, and her sister Zahara's petition was approved on September 28, making her Zahara Marley Jolie. Vivienne's twin brother, Knox, reportedly used only "Knox Jolie" on his high school diploma earlier this year, but there has been no confirmation that he has legally changed his name.
Jolie, 51, and Pitt, 62, separated in 2016, and their divorce was finalized in December 2024. Vivienne has not publicly commented on the change, and this report records only what the court documents establish, without speculating about her personal reasons.
