Bavaria Deputy Premier Hubert Aiwanger Found Dead in Berlin Hotel at 55: Berlin Prosecutors Open Death Investigation

Hubert Aiwanger, deputy premier of the German state of Bavaria, its minister for economic affairs and leader of the Free Voters party, was found dead in a Berlin hotel room on Wednesday, November 4, at the age of 55. Bavarian premier Markus Soeder confirmed the death on the social media platform X, saying the sudden death of Hubert Aiwanger was a terrible tragedy and that everyone was deeply shocked. Berlin police and prosecutors have opened a death investigation to establish the specific cause and circumstances of his death and to rule out any third-party culpability; no cause of death has been announced.
The daily Bild reported that Aiwanger had been in Berlin for the opening of his party's office in the capital but had missed the occasion after he felt unwell, and that his body was later found in his hotel room. German media, citing party colleagues, reported that he had recently suffered from gastroenteritis and that a natural cause was being presumed, although this has not been officially confirmed.
Born on January 26, 1971, in Lower Bavaria, Aiwanger became federal chairman of the Free Voters in 2018 and led the party into Bavaria's state government the same year, in coalition with the Christian Social Union. He served as deputy premier and as Bavarian minister for economic affairs, regional development and energy from 2018 until his death. He lived with his partner Tanja Schweiger, a local politician, and they had two sons.
