New York Commits $10 Million to Restore Floyd Bennett Field Hangars: Historic Hangars 3 and 4 to Become Year-Round Public Space

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on November 3 that the state will provide $10 million to the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy to restore and reactivate historic Hangars 3 and 4 at Floyd Bennett Field. The field, in Brooklyn, Kings County, was New York City's first municipal airport and is now part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.

The state grant funds Phase 1 of the project, restoring the hangar interiors so the public can access the space for affordable year-round programming, including education services, workforce development, technological innovation and park programs. Hochul noted the field was once where aviators such as Amelia Earhart took to the skies. Robert J. Rodriguez, president and CEO of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), said the authority will administer the investment.

Floyd Bennett Field is one of New York City's largest and most accessible historic open spaces, within reach of 14 million New Yorkers. State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud and Assemblymember Jaime Williams welcomed the funding. Conservancy chairman Tom Secunda called the commitment a transformative investment, and executive director Terri Carta said the group is working with the National Park Service to reimagine Hangars 3 and 4 as a destination for experiencing Jamaica Bay.

CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez said the university's Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay will partner with the National Park Service and the conservancy on climate research and public education at the site.
