San Diego Invites Seniors to Three El Niño Preparedness Workshops Starting November 4

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · City · GSM News

The City of San Diego, in San Diego County, California, announced on November 3 that, as the city braces for a strong El Niño weather pattern this fall and winter, its Office of Emergency Services (OES) will host three preparedness workshops for seniors over the next two weeks at city senior centers, reaching out to residents who may be especially vulnerable.

The workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at 11 a.m. at the Cathy Hopper Friendship Center, 4425 Bannock Ave. (619-235-1113); Thursday, November 5, at 2 p.m. at the San Ysidro Senior Center, 125 East Park Ave. (619-247-4207); and Wednesday, November 18, at 1:30 p.m. at the George L. Stevens Senior Center, 570 S. 65th Street (619-266-2066).

Held in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department's AgeWell Services, the events cover how to make a disaster preparedness plan, how to build a "go kit" with critical supplies like medications and documents, and how to sign up for emergency alerts, along with information for home-bound seniors on accessing transportation during an emergency and accessibility support for individuals with hearing or vision loss. AgeWell staff will also take requests for sandbag deliveries to senior residents, especially those in flood-prone areas; deliveries are scheduled to begin November 14 and requests can be made by calling 619-525-8247.

"As we continue to remind San Diegans to be prepared for El Niño, we ask residents to make sure our aging community is also prepared," said Deputy Fire Chief Willy Melendez, who oversees the Office of Emergency Services. "These workshops are tailored just for them, so we recommend seniors take advantage of this unique opportunity." The city said forecasts indicate a very strong El Niño will increase storm intensity this fall and winter, and that San Diego received more than twice its normal rainfall in October. City crews are cleaning drains, inspecting and clearing storm channels, staging equipment including temporary pumps, and monitoring conditions around the clock. All San Diegans are encouraged to determine whether they live in a flood zone, make an evacuation plan and build a go kit; tips and resources are at sandiego.gov/ElNino.
