A $500,000 State Grant Brings 250 New Trees to Cool Koreatown and Mid City

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · City · GSM News

The City of Los Angeles, in Los Angeles County, California, reported on November 3 that a new green project is taking root in Koreatown: backed by a $500,000 state grant from Assemblymember Mark González, crews are planting 250 trees across Koreatown and Mid City to beat the heat.

The city said a thick tree canopy can drop ground temperatures by up to 30 degrees. This cooling effect protects residents from dangerous heat waves and makes neighborhood streets safer and more walkable. Koreatown's dense built environment and long-standing shortage of shade have made it one of the city's most heat-exposed neighborhoods.

According to the city, this launch is only the start of a much bigger goal: organizers plan to plant over 1,000 trees, creating cool, shaded sidewalks where neighbors can stroll safely and take pride in their community.
