North Korea: South Korean Military Says North Fired Multiple Missiles From Sondok Toward the East Sea, Flying Under 300 km

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on November 4 that North Korea fired multiple missiles toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan) early Wednesday from the Sondok area in South Hamgyong Province, and that South Korean and US authorities were coordinating further analysis of the missiles' specifications. The JCS said the military is monitoring the North's movements under a robust South Korea-US combined defence posture and maintains the capability and readiness to respond overwhelmingly to any provocations.
The missiles are believed to have flown less than 300 kilometres and may have been close-range ballistic missiles. Shin Jong-woo, secretary-general of the Seoul-based Korea Defense and Security Forum, told Yonhap News Agency the weapon appeared to be the Hwasong-11 Ra surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missile. If confirmed, it would be North Korea's third ballistic missile launch in a week: the North fired around a dozen short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea last Thursday, and North Korean state media reported a test on Saturday of a cluster bomb mountable on tactical ballistic missiles, a test the South Korean military did not disclose detecting.
The launch coincided with voting in the US midterm elections and with back-to-back statements this week by Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. In a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency early on November 4, Kim again denied North Korean involvement in the Binance cryptocurrency theft, and said that while the country remains open to dialogue with the United States as an option for peace, such dialogue would not be necessary for its own interest.
