India: Re-elected President of the International Solar Alliance for a Third Term as France Continues as Co-President of the 130-Member Alliance

India has been elected President of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for a third consecutive term, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced in New Delhi on November 3, with France re-elected as Co-President. Joshi thanked member countries for their continued trust in India. The announcement came at a press conference during the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 2 and runs until November 5.

Joshi recalled that India and France established the ISA in 2015, guided by the vision of "Power To Empower" and the principle of One Sun, One World, One Grid. The Alliance now has 130 signatory and member countries and is a platform for international cooperation, particularly for the Global South. He said discussions at the summit would reinforce a clear priority: moving from solar commitments to investments, from partnerships to projects, and from ambition to impact, and that India's new term will focus on mobilising investment and accelerating deployment.

On financing, Joshi described the US$200 million Africa Solar Facility as an important step towards unlocking investment in Africa's distributed renewable energy sector, with India's commitment of around Rs 225 crore (about US$25 million), and pointed to the US$300 million Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund as a model for scaling the approach across Africa. ISA-supported projects in Fiji, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles power healthcare facilities and schools, provide clean drinking water and support agricultural cold storage, he said, and 17 Solar Technology Application Resource Centres and a super intelligence (SI)-enabled ISA Academy are building national capabilities. India also plans to empower 3 million farmers through solar energy and expand agrivoltaics, adapting its PM-KUSUM model across member countries, particularly in Africa.
