Follow-up: Iran's Revolutionary Guard Says Four Tankers Caught Fire After Striking Mines South of the Strait of Hormuz and Two Other Vessels Were Seized

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · World · GSM News

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement on November 4 that four oil tankers were destroyed after striking naval mines while trying to traverse a route it described as prohibited, south of the Strait of Hormuz, and that the tankers were still ablaze. The statement added that two other vessels had been seized. Reuters reported the contents of the statement on November 4; the statement did not publish the names or flags of the tankers involved.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key waterway for global oil shipments. A standoff over passage through the strait and US-Iran negotiations has continued for weeks: GSM previously reported that Iran said in late October that seven tankers had caught fire and been damaged in the strait in one night, and that Tehran has set conditions under which the strait would reopen after an agreement. Contacts between the United States and Iran, mediated by Qatar, are continuing, with no breakthrough reported so far.

The mine-strike and seizure claims in the Revolutionary Guard's latest statement are Iran's account. The actual state of shipping around the strait awaits further notices from shipping bodies and the governments concerned.
