Indonesia: Chief of Staff and Two Top Police Officers Arrested Over Alleged Wiretapping of President, Prabowo Sacks Chief of Staff Over Possible Treason

Three senior Indonesian police officers, including President Prabowo Subianto's chief of staff Listyo Sigit Prabowo, have been arrested on suspicion of wiretapping the president, ministers and others, Indonesian authorities said. Police named the suspects only by their initials, but Reuters confirmed with the government that Listyo, who remains in the police force and is not related to the president, was among those detained; he had served as national police chief until becoming the president's chief of staff last month.
Asep Safrudin, head of the national police criminal investigation unit, told a press conference late on November 3 that the three allegedly conducted non-procedural or illegal wiretapping of the phone numbers of the president, state officials, political figures, mass organisation leaders, media, non-government organisations and business people from 2025 into this year. Several numbers were entered into the Lawful Interception Management System, and the suspects allegedly ordered the deletion of wiretapping records last month to leave no trace. Police said the wiretapping was ordered without a formal request from investigators or any police reports and was unrelated to any law enforcement process; 13 people have been questioned and police are investigating whether others were involved. The alleged offences, covering illegal interception, unauthorised access to electronic systems and deletion of electronic data, carry maximum prison terms of 10, six and eight years respectively, Asep said.
Senior legal affairs minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the president had been informed, the investigation remained at an early stage, and the government had yet to determine a motive or find evidence linking the suspects to treason. On November 4, Prabowo sacked his chief of staff, and presidential spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi told reporters the alleged wiretapping may constitute treason and endanger state security.
