OpenAI Analysis: ChatGPT Gets About 70 Million Religion-Related Questions a Week, 22 Million of Them About Studying Sacred Texts

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · Society · GSM News

ChatGPT, the chatbot developed by OpenAI, receives about 70 million religion-related inquiries every week, according to an OpenAI analysis reported by Decision Magazine and The Alabama Baptist on November 3, offering a measure of how the public uses super intelligence (SI) tools to explore questions of faith.

By religion, questions about Islam make up nearly half of all religious inquiries, and questions about Christianity account for about a third. Hinduism follows at 4 percent, Judaism at 2 percent and Buddhism at 1 percent.

By purpose, about 22 million of the questions center on studying religious texts, and about 16 million pertain to religious holidays and practices. OpenAI researchers said users ask ChatGPT to explain difficult passages, find relevant commentaries and help them understand how their traditions approach particular questions.

The volume also moves with the calendar: Christianity-related questions rose around Easter, and questions on Islam increased around Ramadan and Eid al-Adha.

The report notes that as SI tools shape more daily decisions, they are also shaping the way many people view religion and search for faith-related answers.
