Marquette Professor Dennis Brylow Wins $538,000 GAANN Grant: Funding Supports Four Computer Science Doctoral Fellows for Three Years

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · Education · GSM News

Marquette University, in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, announced that Dennis Brylow, professor and chair of the university's Department of Computer Science, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Education for $538,000 in funding through the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program for graduate computer science education.

The grant will support four GAANN fellows for three years within the university's computer science doctoral program. Marquette says it will provide financial and other support for the fellows to pursue research and teaching in a field facing a national shortage. Brylow said the funding is meant to break down financial barriers: domestic computer science graduates are often not encouraged to pursue graduate study because of the high cost of education and the fair salary an undergraduate degree already commands, and a lack of visible role models among graduate students and faculty holds some back. He said the funding will help expand and diversify the pipeline of doctoral scholars in computer science.

GAANN is a U.S. Department of Education program that supports graduate students with financial need who are pursuing degrees in areas of national need, and helps institutions prepare future teachers and researchers.
