Macron Chairs Defence Council as France Braces for Nationwide Protests on November 5

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · World · GSM News

French President Emmanuel Macron chaired a meeting of the Defence and National Security Council at the Élysée Palace on November 4 to prepare for two days of nationwide protests announced for November 5 and 7. The meeting, held after the weekly cabinet session, brought together the head of the domestic intelligence service, the chief of the defence staff and the leadership of the national police, with public order at the top of the agenda.

The November 5 protests have been called by trade unions, with private- and public-sector workers and pensioners set to march over wages and purchasing power. The Yellow Vest movement, mobilising since October 17 over the rising cost of living, has also called on supporters to join Thursday's strike and demonstrations and to keep mobilising through Saturday. French media, citing intelligence assessments, reported that between 500,000 and 700,000 demonstrators could turn out in the Paris region on November 5.
