The City and County of Honolulu, in Honolulu County, Hawaii, held a blessing and dedication ceremony on November 4 for a new Honolulu Ocean Safety Department facility, as the Kailua Operations Annex near Kailua Beach Park became operational. The 1,680-square-foot, $3.3 million facility at 592 Kaneapu Place in Kailua is the first facility specifically designed and built for Honolulu's ocean lifeguards in the department's 109-year history.

The building includes two offices, a bathroom, a kitchenette, an equipment storage room and an apparatus bay for trucks and watercraft. It will serve as a permanent operations base for lifeguards covering the coastline from the Mokapu Peninsula to Waimanalo Bay, replacing temporary facilities previously used by Ocean Safety personnel. Mayor Rick Blangiardi said at the ceremony that the building is an investment in public safety, in first responders and in the people of the community; Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lager said it represents all the lifeguards and the city's commitment to public safety.

Kailua Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Oahu's windward coast, drawing residents and visitors year-round. With the new annex, lifeguards can store equipment securely, monitor ocean conditions and deploy resources to respond to emergencies more effectively.
