Chinese Fan Painting Exhibition Closes November 8 in Minneapolis, With Song-Yuan Round Fans and Ming-Qing Folding Fans

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · Culture & Travel · GSM News

The exhibition "Ink Rhythms on the Breeze: The Art of Chinese Fan Paintings" at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, closes on November 8. It has been on view since November 29, 2025, in the museum's Sit Gallery (203) and is free to the public.

According to the museum, the exhibition explores the intimate world of Chinese fan painting, featuring circular silk fans from the Song and Yuan dynasties (10th-14th centuries) and folding fans from the Ming and Qing periods (14th to early 20th centuries). On each small surface, poetry, calligraphy and painted images converge in the palm of the hand, reflecting centuries of refined aesthetic practice by court artists and literati scholars alike. All works are drawn from Mia's own collection.

Mia is a leading art institution in the Twin Cities with deep Asian art holdings. The fans will come down after November 8, so visitors planning to see the show should go before it closes.
