Ethiopia and China Sign $15 Million Grant to Support Ethio-Djibouti Railway Supplementary Works

ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia and China signed a $15 million grant agreement in Addis Ababa on November 4 to support supplementary works on the Ethio-Djibouti Railway, the Ethiopian News Agency reported. Ethiopia's State Minister of Finance Tiguist Fisseha and Liu Xiaoguang, minister counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, signed for their respective governments.
Financed through China's aid program, the grant will supply mechanical and electrical spare parts for the railway's electric locomotives, specialized track components and station-yard accessories, along with equipment upgrades and technical assistance, in order to strengthen maintenance capacity, reduce disruptions and improve the line's long-term reliability.
The Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, a standard-gauge electrified line of about 752 kilometres, opened in January 2018 and links the Ethiopian capital with the Port of Djibouti. For landlocked Ethiopia, it is the country's principal trade corridor.
