Pope Leo XIV Receives Chilean President Kast at the Vatican for Talks on Migration and Demographic Decline

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · World · GSM News

The Holy See Press Office said in a press release on November 4 that Pope Leo XIV received the President of the Republic of Chile, José Antonio Kast, in audience that morning at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. Kast subsequently met with Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

During the cordial talks, held at the Secretariat of State, the good existing relations between the Holy See and Chile were emphasized, and reference was made to the significant contribution of the Catholic Church to the social life of the country, as well as its spiritual life through popular religiosity.

Attention then turned to some matters of common interest in the regional and international sphere, with particular reference to migration and demographic decline.

According to Rome Reports, a Chilean priest travelling with the presidential delegation said the President did not extend a formal invitation for the Pope to visit Chile on this trip. Kast took office as President of Chile in March this year.
