Applications for the U.S. Department of Justice's Federal Firearm Rights Restoration (FFRR) program open to the general public on November 4, with the first 5,000 candidates able to apply.

Under the Justice Department's staged schedule, the program first opened to invited candidates on September 25, 2026. The November 4 stage opens applications to the public for the first 5,000 candidates. The next stage is scheduled for January 4, 2027, when 500 more candidates can apply and the application fee will begin.

The department notes that under 18 U.S.C. 925(c), the Attorney General can restore federal firearm rights. Individuals who are federally prohibited from possessing firearms may apply through the FFRR process for individualized consideration of restoration.

The Justice Department publishes the application steps and completeness requirements on the FFRR website, and says additional details regarding application public openings will be posted there.
