EPA Begins Sixth Five-Year Review of Ormet Corp. Superfund Site: Public Comments Due by February 1, 2027

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on November 4 that it is conducting the sixth five-year review of the Ormet Corp. Superfund site in Monroe County, Ohio. The site sits along the Ohio River on State Route 7, approximately three miles north of the city of Hannibal.
The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up, or where cleanup has been ongoing for at least five years with waste managed on-site, to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of the site, and the EPA says it is an opportunity for the public to tell the agency about site conditions and any concerns.
Cleanup at the site included excavating soils and sediment contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, and placing them in an on-site containment cell, building a landfill cap, installing a flushing system on a former waste storage area, performing groundwater extraction and treatment, conducting long-term monitoring and maintenance, and limiting the use of and access to the site.
The review is expected to be completed in April 2027, and comments are due by February 1, 2027. Comments can be directed to Remedial Project Manager Aaron Green at 312-353-4633 or Community Involvement Coordinator Adrian Palomeque at 440-250-1715, or to the EPA toll-free line at 800-621-8431, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
