Montana Man Sentenced to 5 Years 10 Months for Unlawful Gun Stash: Numerous Privately Made Firearms Found at Red Lodge Home

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

A federal court in Billings, Montana, has sentenced James Faddis Kennedy, 76, of Red Lodge, to five years and 10 months in prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm, U.S. Attorney Scott Twito for the District of Montana announced. Kennedy was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $25,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Kathleen S. Lane presided. Kennedy pleaded guilty in July 2026.

According to court documents, Kennedy had previously been convicted of possessing an unregistered firearm. The government alleged he had possibly violated the terms of his release, and on January 14, 2026, law enforcement searched his Red Lodge home, where they found numerous firearms, suppressors and rounds of ammunition. The firearms appeared to be privately made, and officers also found tools associated with the production of privately made firearms.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Zeno Baucus is prosecuting it. The Justice Department said the case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods and Operation Take Back America. (Source: U.S. Department of Justice)
