USDA Housing Preservation Grants Reach Iowa: Two Nonprofits Receive $40,112 Each to Repair 23 Low-Income Rural Homes

Mike Sexton, Iowa state director for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, announced in Des Moines on November 4 that two Iowa nonprofit organizations will receive fiscal year 2026 funding through the Housing Preservation Grant Program to repair owner-occupied homes of low-income rural residents.
Each organization will receive $40,112. The Region XII Council of Governments will rehabilitate homes owned and occupied by very-low-income individuals, making necessary repairs, eliminating health and safety hazards and improving living conditions for 14 homeowners in rural Audubon, Carroll, Crawford, Greene and Sac counties. NIACOG Housing Trust Fund Inc. will use its grant for mechanical work in very-low-income owner-occupied homes, replacing furnaces and air-conditioning units with new energy-efficient models for nine homeowners in rural Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Franklin, Hancock, Kossuth, Mitchell, Winnebago and Worth counties.
Nationwide, Rural Development is investing nearly $8 million through the program to fund home repairs and housing rehabilitation for very-low- and low-income rural residents, expected to repair an estimated 1,228 housing units across rural America.
Sexton said USDA partners with states, municipalities and nonprofits to address all stages of the housing cycle, including repairing eligible homes to keep the affordable rural housing stock in working order, adding that the investments will help fix furnaces, roofs and safety hazards for eligible low-income Iowans and, given Iowa's aging rural population, help senior citizens live independently for as long as possible.
