Follow-up: Broccoli Sprout Salmonella Outbreak Declared Over as Cases Reach 34 and FDA Confirms Imported Seed Lot Source

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated its multistate Salmonella outbreak investigation on November 4: the outbreak linked to broccoli sprouts and microgreens grown from a contaminated seed lot is over, the FDA's investigation is complete, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared the outbreak over.
The final case count is 34 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bovismorbificans across six states, up from the 32 reported when GSM first covered the outbreak on October 7. Illnesses started between July 7 and September 11, 2026; three people were hospitalized and no deaths were reported. Of 30 people interviewed, 29 (97%) reported eating sprouts or microgreens, and 25 reported specifically eating broccoli sprouts.
On the source, Evergreen Fresh Sprouts-brand broccoli sprout samples collected by Washington and Montana state health officials, and broccoli seed samples the FDA collected from the domestic seed supplier, tested positive for Salmonella and matched the outbreak strain by whole genome sequencing. Traceback and laboratory evidence point to a common broccoli seed lot imported from New Zealand (supplier lot W4105) as the likely source of contamination.
All affected products have been recalled: the Evergreen Fresh Sprouts sprouts are past expiration and no longer for sale, while recalled broccoli sprouting seeds sold by Gardeners Basics, Eden Brothers, Home Grown and others have a long shelf life and may still be in consumers' homes. The FDA advises consumers, restaurants and retailers not to use the recalled seeds and to clean and sanitize surfaces and containers that touched them, and says it will update its advisory if additional downstream recalls are initiated.
