Follow-Up: Dow Surges 1,569 Points for Best Day Since April 2025 in Post-Midterm Rally as Oil Slides

U.S. stocks closed sharply higher on November 4. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1,569.40 points, or 3.03%, to close at 53,356.12, its best single day since April 9, 2025. The S&P 500 gained 119.70 points, or 1.58%, to 7,688.62, and the Nasdaq Composite added 364.50 points, or 1.44%, to 25,736.51. The small-cap Russell 2000 rose 1.58%.
The close reversed the election-night move in futures, when stock futures slid and Nasdaq-100 futures led the decline, as GSM reported earlier. As the Democrats' capture of both chambers in the midterm elections became clear and President Donald Trump accepted the results, election uncertainty faded and the rally built through the session, with the Dow closing above 53,000 for the first time since September 8.
Falling oil added fuel: December West Texas Intermediate crude settled at $88.12 a barrel, down from $96.09 the previous session, a drop of more than 8%. CNN reported that comments by Vice President JD Vance attributing the Republican losses to the Iran war set off a swift drop in crude prices.
Microsoft closed up 6.68% at $555.80, and Amazon and Apple were among the Dow's intraday leaders. CNBC reported that analysts pointed to the clear election result and the prospect of divided government as the main reasons for Wall Street's buying.
