St. Louis Felon Sentenced to 115 Months in Prison for Shooting and Wounding a Man

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Missouri announced on November 4 that Shan Mims, 39, of St. Louis, Missouri, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Cristian M. Stevens to 115 months in federal prison for shooting and wounding a man in March.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, on March 17, 2026, Mims confronted the victim at his apartment complex. Surveillance video shows Mims throwing a water bottle at the victim's car as it drove by, then approaching the car with his hand inside his jacket as if he had a gun. The victim opened his car door and produced a handgun, and the two exchanged gunfire. After shooting the victim, Mims ran down a sidewalk out of view, then circled back and stood behind a tree pointing his firearm at the victim, who fired once at Mims before driving off.

Nine days later, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers searching Mims's bedroom under a court-approved warrant found the stolen .380-caliber handgun and cocaine base. Mims pleaded guilty in July.

At the time of the shooting, Mims was on supervised release, having pleaded guilty in federal court in a 2022 case to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, for which he was sentenced to 46 months in prison. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Christian Goeke prosecuted it. (Source: U.S. Department of Justice)
