Ho Chi Minh City Police Uncover Suspected Scam Base: 13 of 14 Foreigners Found Are Chinese Nationals in Fake Stock-Exchange Case
HO CHI MINH CITY — The Ho Chi Minh City Police announced on November 8 that its immigration management department, together with Tan My ward police, raided a house in the Everich 3 residential area of Tan My ward on the evening of November 4 and found 14 foreigners with no temporary-residence registrations, 13 of them Chinese nationals and one a Moroccan national, suspected of organizing online investment fraud through fake securities trading platforms. The case remains under investigation.
Police said the house, kept closed with its occupants living apart from the neighborhood, drew attention during a citywide campaign to check on illegally residing foreigners. During the inspection at 18:30 on November 4, officers seized 29 desktop computers, five laptops, 112 mobile phones, Wi-Fi equipment, and suspected fraud scripts and documents.
Police said the group is suspected of building fake stock exchanges that mimic the interfaces of reputable platforms and use lookalike domain names to win victims' trust and induce them to transfer investment funds. Vietnamese media reported that the suspects were allegedly recruited through social media and brought into Vietnam illegally along trails on the Vietnam-Cambodia and Vietnam-China borders; those accounts await further verification by the Vietnamese side.
The city's immigration department has reported the case to the municipal police leadership and is working with other units to clarify each of the 14 people's roles, the operation's organization and the alleged offences, for handling under the law.
