Canada and China Agree to Extend Market Access Arrangement Through 2028

Global Affairs Canada announced on November 4 that Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu has announced an extension, through 2028, of the favourable market access enjoyed by Canadian canola meal, peas, lobsters and crab.
The arrangement stems from the trade deal reached in January during Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to Beijing: effective March 1, 2026, China suspended its anti-discrimination tariffs on Canadian canola meal, peas, lobster and crab, originally until the end of 2026, while the combined applied tariff on Canadian canola seed was reduced to about 14.9%, down from a combined level of almost 85%. The new announcement extends that favourable access by two more years, to the end of 2028.
Sidhu is in China this week: under his announced itinerary he is in Beijing and Shanghai from November 3 to 6, co-leading the Joint Economic and Trade Commission meeting in Beijing with China's Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao. Canada has set a goal of increasing its exports to China by 50% by 2030.
