Nigeria: President Tinubu Seeks New 7.7 Billion Dollar External Borrowing, Replacing Earlier 20.5 Billion Request

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · World · GSM News

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has asked lawmakers to approve a new US$7.7 billion external borrowing plan to help fund projects and programmes in the 2026 budget and support the government's economic reform agenda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said on November 4.

Akpabio said the request supersedes an earlier proposal to borrow US$20.52 billion externally, saying the government had revised the plan to reflect funding from multiple sources and provide greater detail on its financing structure.

Nigeria's 2026 budget provides for 29.2 trillion naira (US$21.70 billion) in borrowing to fund a 31.4 trillion naira deficit, including 18.4 trillion naira from domestic markets and 10.79 trillion naira externally, Akpabio said.
