'Materials, Methods, and Meanings' Opens November 6: Craft in the Archives of American Art

The Archives of American Art opens "Materials, Methods, and Meanings: Craft in the Archives of American Art" on November 6 at the Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery in the Donald W. Reynolds Center, Washington, D.C. The free exhibition, which requires no passes, runs through April 16, 2027.
Drawn from the Archives' deep craft holdings, the show uses documents, sketches, letters and tools to reveal how craft artists redefined their fields — experimenting with clay, fiber, glass, metal and wood, inventing new methods and radical forms charged with social, cultural and personal meaning.
The exhibition is part of Handwork 2026, the nationwide Craft in America initiative, and the Smithsonian's Our Shared Future: 250 program. The gallery, at 8th and F Streets NW, is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (closed December 25). The Archives suggests pairing the visit with the Renwick Gallery's Handwork exhibition in the same season celebrating American craft for the nation's 250th anniversary.
