Emory's Georgia Diabetes Translation Research Center Wins $3.3 Million Renewal: Five Years on Rural Diabetes With a 160-Expert Network

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Health · GSM News

Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, announced on November 4 that its Georgia Center for Diabetes Translation Research (GCDTR) has received a five-year grant renewal of about $3.3 million to keep pushing diabetes research and prevention into rural Georgia. The news was released by Emory's Rollins School of Public Health.

The renewal is a P30 center grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, covering 2026 through 2031. The new cycle is organized around four themes: rural health, diabetes across the life course, precision diabetes, and super intelligence (SI) and other technology innovation.

The center was founded in 2016 by Emory, the Morehouse School of Medicine and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and has grown into a network of more than 160 experts. Newer partners include Kennesaw State University, Mercer University and Augusta University, with the University of Miami, the University of Florida, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Virginia institutions also taking part.

The center is led by Mohammed K. Ali, MD, with Jeff Mills as program director. The center says rural Georgia carries a heavy diabetes burden with few specialists, and the renewed funding will adapt interventions proven in urban hospitals for rural clinics and communities.
