Union Commonwealth University, in Barbourville, Knox County, Kentucky, announced on November 4 that it has received about $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen student retention and career readiness. The university is at 310 College Street in Barbourville.

The five-year award comes through the department's Title III Strengthening Institutions Program, under the project title "From Access to Outcomes: Advancing Retention and Career Pathways for Student Success." It will fund a new Career & Student Success Center, stronger early-alert and intervention systems, degree pathway planning, and paid, credit-bearing internships.

The grant also funds four positions: a Title III director, a local student success coach, a career services coach arriving in year two, and an administrative assistant. A further $250,000 endowment will be built with $125,000 in federal funds matched one-to-one by $125,000 in non-federal funds.

President Dr. DJ Washington said the investment will help the university, which serves students in Appalachia, turn access into graduation and employment outcomes.
