California Joins 15-State Sting on Unlicensed Contractors: 39 Operations, 25 Citations

Sacramento — The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) said on Nov. 2 that it took part in a coordinated 15-state enforcement effort organized by the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA), running 39 sting and sweep operations across California that produced 73 enforcement actions targeting unlicensed contracting and illegal advertising.
In undercover stings in three counties, unlicensed operators quoted prices ranging from $1,100 to $35,000 for home-improvement work. Officers issued 25 misdemeanor notices to appear for unlicensed contracting and illegal advertising, plus 10 administrative citations, and referred six people to local prosecutors.
Sweeps covering 18 counties visited 182 job sites, referred 11 cases to prosecutors, issued 13 citations to licensed contractors and six to unlicensed operators, sent two advisory letters, ordered work stopped at 11 sites and issued 20 advisory notices.
Under California law, any project totaling $1,000 or more in labor and materials, or one that requires a building permit or uses employees, must be performed by a licensed contractor. CSLB urged consumers to verify a contractor's license status on its website before signing, and to report suspected unlicensed activity at 1-800-321-CSLB (2752).
