Democrat Amish Shah Wins Arizona's 1st Congressional District

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · States · GSM News

Democrat Amish Shah was confirmed on Nov. 5 by two major news organizations as the winner of Arizona's 1st Congressional District, defeating Republican Jay Feely with a commanding lead in the count. Shah is a former state legislator whose profession is emergency room medicine; Feely is a former Arizona Cardinals kicker who was endorsed by President Trump.

The 1st District covers north Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek and Fountain Hills, along with parts of the Salt River and Fort McDowell tribal reservations. On election night, Shah struck a moderate tone at a Democratic gathering in Phoenix, pledging to 'do the right thing, not just the politically expedient thing.' Feely said on election night that whatever the result, he and his wife were at peace with it.

The race drew heavy spending, with outside groups putting in more than $25 million by mid-October. Arizona election results remain unofficial until local and state officials complete the count and certify them. Shah is expected to take office in January as part of the Democrats' new House majority.
