Louisiana Continued Jobless Claims Fall for 11th Straight Week, Down About a Third From Last Year

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Finance · GSM News

Continued unemployment insurance claims in Louisiana fell for an 11th consecutive week in October, running about a third below the level of a year earlier. Data from the Louisiana Workforce Commission show that continued weeks claimed fell to 5,295 in the week ending October 17, down from 5,423 the prior week and 7,898 in the same period of 2025. Initial claims also declined, from 1,261 to 1,179. The state said it could not quantify how much the drop in continued claims saved taxpayers. Governor Jeff Landry's office said in a statement that 11 straight weeks of decline was no accident, attributing it to the administration's economic development efforts and major investments announced by companies including Hyundai, Meta and SpaceX, which plan to invest more than $150 billion in the state and create thousands of jobs. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show Louisiana's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.0 percent in September, down from 4.2 percent in August. The report also noted that unemployment insurance data alone cannot prove a causal link between those investments and the falling claims.
