Georgia's Undefeated Newton High Football Team Investigated Over Alleged Ineligible Player

The Georgia High School Association confirmed on November 5 that it is investigating a complaint alleging that the undefeated Newton High School football team used an ineligible player. Executive Director Tim Scott confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that day that the association had received the complaint, but said that under GHSA bylaws the investigation will not be completed, and no ruling issued, before the state playoffs end. Newton High, located in Covington, entered the final week of the regular season at 9-0, the best start in school history. Under association rules, a team found to have used an ineligible player must forfeit every game in which that player participated. Over the past decade, the association has forced at least five football programs to forfeit at least six games over eligibility violations. Scott cautioned against presuming Newton will be penalized, noting that complaints submitted to the association often do not result in sanctions. Newton remains scheduled to close the regular season against South Gwinnett on November 6 before the Georgia playoffs begin on November 13.
