Rhode Island Senate Takes Up Outgoing Governor McKee's Slate of Judicial Nominations

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

The Rhode Island Senate began on November 5 to take up a slate of judicial nominations from outgoing Governor Dan McKee, his chance to leave a mark on the state court system in the final months of his term. The most significant is the elevation of Superior Court Judge Lewis Matos to the five-member Rhode Island Supreme Court. McKee announced the nomination in August, then held it back so the 60-day legislative review clock would not run out while lawmakers were away campaigning. The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled hearings and deliberations on November 17, 18 and December 1, with a full Senate vote expected on December 2. Vacancies awaiting appointment also include chief judge of the District Court, with candidates including former Democratic state senator Stephen Archambault and four sitting district court judges, and two Superior Court vacancies, one succeeding former Senate president Joseph Montalbano, who became presiding justice of the Superior Court, and one succeeding retired Judge Jeffrey Lanphear. All the nominations require Senate confirmation, and those confirmed will serve for life.
