Boston School Committee approves exam school admissions changes, dropping school points and adding a citywide round

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Education · GSM News

The Boston School Committee voted on the evening of November 5 to approve revisions to the exam school admissions policy, passing 4-2, with member Quoc Tran among those voting in favor. The new policy takes effect immediately for the 2026-27 admissions cycle, and the district aims to keep it in place for at least three years.

The changes eliminate the 10 school-based points previously awarded to students at schools with high shares of economically disadvantaged students, reduce housing-based points from 15 to 10, and add a citywide round in which the first 20% of seats at each exam school go to the highest composite scores citywide. Composite scores are weighted 70% grade point average and 30% assessment.

The committee also approved career and technical education admissions and the competency determination policy for the 2026-27 school year. The superintendent briefed members on the district's response for families affected by the federal government shutdown's disruption of food assistance. (Source: Boston Public Schools)
