Mayor-elect Mamdani holds first post-election press conference in Queens, names transition team
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani held his first post-election press conference on November 5 at the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, formally launching his transition. As GSM reported earlier, Mamdani won the November 3 election with 50.4% of the vote, in the city's highest-turnout mayoral race since 1969.
Mamdani announced a transition team co-chaired by Maria Torres-Springer, Melanie Hartzog, Lina Khan and Grace Bonilla, with Elana Leopold as executive director.
Mamdani takes office on January 1. At 34, he will be New York's first Muslim and first South Asian mayor, and its youngest in more than a century. At the press conference he restated campaign pledges including free child care, free city buses and city-run affordable grocery stores. (Source: Associated Press)
