Follow-up: HHS Secretary Kennedy Visits North Dakota Ranch for Roundtable on Soil Health

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited North Dakota on Nov. 5, joining a roundtable at Black Leg Ranch near McKenzie hosted by U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, together with Governor Kelly Armstrong, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Senator John Hoeven, Representative Julie Fedorchak, state Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring and local farmers and ranchers. The discussion focused on regenerative agriculture.
Armstrong stressed the importance of soil health to agricultural development and to Americans' health and well-being, and described the Governor's Soil Health and Habitat Legacy Program, a two-year, $6.5 million voluntary pilot program launched in January of this year. Run by the state Game and Fish Department together with the North Dakota Association of Soil Conservation Districts, it encourages producers to use perennial grass cover to raise cropland productivity and resilience while improving soil health and water retention, creating wildlife habitat and providing hunter access. The program was fully subscribed for 2026, covering more than 9,000 acres.
The visit brought the head of the federal health department into direct conversation with an agricultural state on soil health, a sign that soil and food issues are becoming a new focus of federal health policy.
