Follow-Up: Flávio Bolsonaro Takes the Stage at the CPAC Gala at Mar-a-Lago, His First Major Political Appearance Since Fleeing to the U.S.

Palm Beach — Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro appeared on Thursday evening, November 5, at the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, where he attended and spoke at the annual gala dinner of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). It was his first major public political appearance since he fled Brazil and arrived in the United States on October 28.

The gala ran from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. local time. Flávio was listed as a speaker alongside his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro, a former federal deputy; other announced speakers included U.S. Senators Rick Scott and Mike Lee, Representative Kat Cammack and former British Prime Minister Liz Truss. During the evening, Flávio exchanged a brief greeting with actor Jim Caviezel, who is set to portray Flávio's father, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, in the biographical film Dark Horse; the greeting was filmed by Eduardo and posted on his social media accounts.

CPAC promoted the appearance as Flávio's first in-person public event since arriving in the United States; he had previously been seen on November 2 attending a service with his family at a Brazilian church in Coral Springs, Florida. Brazilian media have framed the brothers' presence as an effort to build ties with the American conservative movement and extend the opposition to President Lula da Silva's government onto U.S. soil. Flávio has claimed he is the victim of judicial persecution and has said he intends to lead an opposition in exile.

After losing the October 25 presidential runoff to Lula, Flávio defied a Supreme Court order by Justice Alexandre de Moraes barring him from leaving Brazil and, with his passports cancelled, travelled via Argentina and Ecuador to the United States. He is also under investigation by Brazil's Federal Police and the Supreme Federal Court over suspicions including money laundering and foreign-currency evasion connected to fundraising for the Dark Horse film.
