The Met Unveils Spring 2027 Costume Institute Theme 'extraORDINARY': More Than 200 Works Celebrate Everyday Clothing

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Fashion · GSM News

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York announced on November 5, 2026, that the Costume Institute's spring 2027 exhibition will be titled 'extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.' The show opens to the public on May 9, 2027 and runs through January 9, 2028; the Met Gala benefit will take place on May 3, 2027.

Curated by Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute's curator in charge, with Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben, the exhibition will include more than 200 works. According to the museum, it will explore how designers transform familiar garments, materials and objects - from jeans, T-shirts and puffer coats to paper, plastic and metal - inviting visitors to see the everyday anew.

The theme replaces a planned designer retrospective: on July 31 the museum had announced 'John Galliano: Horizons' for spring 2027, and on August 31 the museum and Galliano jointly announced that the show would not go forward. Bolton told reporters the team had no backup plan, but wanted the new exhibition to be just as challenging and beautiful. The dress code for the 2027 Met Gala has not yet been announced.
