Harvard Division of Continuing Education Proposes Renaming and Restructuring, With Two New Graduate Degrees

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Education · GSM News

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts — Harvard University's Division of Continuing Education has proposed sweeping reforms, including renaming the division the Harvard School of Continuing and Professional Studies and restructuring its graduate degrees. The proposal requires approval from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the university's governing boards.

The Harvard Crimson reported that Nancy J. Coleman, dean of the division, announced the proposal to affiliates on Tuesday. It would bring four academic units — the Harvard Extension School, Harvard Summer School, Harvard Professional & Executive Development and the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement — together under the new name.

On degrees, the proposal would introduce two graduate degree titles in place of the current Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies: a Master of Liberal Studies for liberal arts programmes and a Master of Professional Studies for applied and professional programmes. The Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies would not change, though the undergraduate programme is undergoing a separate review.

Coleman wrote that the proposal aims to better communicate to employers what the division offers and bring it in line with peer institutions. It has been presented to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and, if approved there, would move to the Board of Overseers and the Corporation; if finally approved, it would take effect on April 6, 2027. The proposal follows a yearslong effort to rebrand the division's programmes.
