DHS Says Minnesota Refused to Honor ICE Detainer for Somali National Convicted of Aggravated Assault and Drug Trafficking

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement on November 5 that Minnesota officials refused to honor a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer and released Mustafa Abdirahman Abdi, an illegal alien from Somalia. According to DHS, ICE lodged the detainer on October 24 asking the Hennepin County Jail in Minneapolis, Minnesota not to release Abdi from custody; sanctuary officials refused to honor the detainer and Abdi was released onto the streets.
DHS listed Abdi's criminal history as including convictions for aggravated assault, assault, aggravated trafficking of schedule drugs (cocaine), unlawful possession of schedule drugs, unlawful furnishing of schedule drugs, and trafficking prison contraband, and arrests for burglary, larceny, and resisting an officer. The department said Abdi illegally entered the country at an unknown date and location, was arrested by ICE in November 2020, and received a final order of removal from an immigration judge on April 2, 2021, after which he was released into the country later that same month.
"Governor Tim Walz and his fellow sanctuary politicians have turned the state of Minnesota into a hotbed of illegal alien crime," said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. "When ICE lodged a detainer for an illegal alien convicted for aggravated assault and drug trafficking, Minneapolis sanctuary politicians refused to cooperate and RELEASED him. Governor Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and other heartless sanctuary politicians are putting American lives at risk for political gain. DHS is calling on sanctuary politicians to put an end to this recklessness before any more lives are lost." DHS said the statement is part of a new daily series highlighting cases in which ICE detainers were not honored, and it cited additional recent cases in Minnesota as background.
