'Being Heumann' Opens in Select Theaters Today: The 504 Sit-In Story Heads to Streaming November 13

Apple Original Films opens Being Heumann in select U.S. theaters on November 6, ahead of its global Apple TV debut on November 13. Directed by Sian Heder, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind CODA, who co-wrote the script with Rebekah Taussig, the film adapts disability rights activist Judy Heumann's memoir of the same name.
Ruth Madeley stars as Heumann, with Mark Ruffalo as Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Joseph Califano. The story centers on the 1977 San Francisco 504 Sit-In, when Heumann and more than a hundred disabled activists occupied a federal building for 25 days to press Califano to sign the Section 504 regulations of the Rehabilitation Act, the longest peaceful occupation of a federal building in U.S. history.
The film premiered on opening night at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. In a nod to Section 504, Regal Cinemas will offer open-caption screenings at more than 100 locations from November 9 to 11, priced at $5.04.
