Two More Senior Justice Department Officials Resign on the Same Day: National Security Chief Eisenberg and Florida U.S. Attorney Quinones Depart

Washington — Two senior U.S. Department of Justice officials resigned on Friday, November 6, accelerating an exodus of senior figures from the department following the midterm elections. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that John Eisenberg, the assistant attorney general who headed the National Security Division, had resigned, and that Jason Reding Quinones, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, departed the same day.
Their departures follow the resignation on Thursday, November 5, of Harmeet Dhillon, who headed the Civil Rights Division. Reuters noted that the department is now without leaders for two of its signature initiatives: relitigating past criminal investigations of President Donald Trump, and targeting higher education.
As U.S. attorney in Miami, Quinones was at the center of efforts to investigate the past criminal probes of Trump, including his handling of classified documents after leaving office in 2021 and his 2016 campaign's contacts with Russia. That investigation, dubbed a 'grand conspiracy' by officials, has struggled to bring criminal charges, and the prosecutor overseeing it, Joseph diGenova, resigned in September. Quinones' office also brought criminal charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro, in a major escalation of the administration's pressure campaign against Cuba.
Reuters said it is not clear why Eisenberg or Quinones resigned. It is not unusual for senior officials to leave government after a midterm election, especially one that delivers a sharp setback to the party in power; Democrats, who won control of Congress, plan a raft of investigations into the Trump administration and the president's business dealings.
