Michael Douglas Says Glenn Close Should Have Won the 1988 Oscar Over Cher: Clip Goes Viral, Cher Responds With Grace

On the October 30 episode of the BBC's Graham Norton Show, Michael Douglas, 82, used a reunion with his Fatal Attraction co-star Glenn Close to relitigate an Oscar result from nearly 40 years ago. The clip has since passed 1.8 million views on X. As BuzzFeed noted, viewers dug up an extra twist: on that 1988 awards night, Cher, who won Best Actress, and Douglas himself, who won Best Actor, posed together backstage holding their statuettes.
Close and Douglas, who played lovers in the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction, appeared alongside guests Kieran Culkin and Naomi Ackie. The conversation turned to Close, 79, receiving an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards on November 15; she joked first that the Academy was giving it to her because its members probably did not want to feel guilty anymore. Douglas then said Close should have won for Fatal Attraction: "She was nominated, I believe, for her fourth time. Cher won that year." When host Graham Norton asked, "Was that for Moonstruck?" and reacted with an "Oh, wow," Douglas replied, "I know, that's what we all said." The audience burst out laughing as Close told him, "Be kind, Michael." Douglas doubled down, calling Close's performance one of the greatest of all time, while Norton quipped, "But Cher put some gray in her hair."
The background is the 60th Academy Awards in 1988: Cher won Best Actress for playing Italian-American widow Loretta Castorini in the romantic comedy Moonstruck, in a field that also included Close, Holly Hunter, Sally Kirkland and Meryl Streep. Close has received eight competitive Oscar nominations without a win, tied with the late Peter O'Toole for the most nominations without a victory.
After the clip spread, Cher's side responded quickly. On November 2, a representative for Cher told Entertainment Weekly: "Cher adores Michael Douglas." People, Parade and other outlets reported that Cher, 80, held no grudge, and a nearly 40-year-old Best Actress debate closed with a gracious four-word answer.
