Chicago's Roseland Community Hospital Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Health · GSM News

CHICAGO — Roseland Community Hospital, on Chicago's South Side, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois on November 4, seeking to restructure its debt while continuing normal operations. The filing stems in part from medical malpractice settlement burdens and the risk of Medicaid cuts under H.R. 1; the hospital listed both assets and liabilities estimated at between $10 million and $50 million.

Roseland is a safety-net hospital serving residents of Chicago's Far South Side, long providing emergency and inpatient care to low-income and uninsured patients; safety-net hospitals have faced chronic funding shortfalls. Chapter 11 protection allows the hospital to keep operating while it restructures its debt.

Hospital spokesperson Nikia McGee said the filing will not affect patient care. The hospital announced in October that it would close its maternity unit. The bankruptcy court will review the hospital's reorganization plan, and creditors, employees and community representatives will take part in the proceedings that follow.
