Twelve Applicants for Denver School Board Vacancy Appear at Forum on Rebuilding Trust

DENVER, Colo. — The 12 applicants for the vacant District 3 seat on the Denver school board appeared at a forum on the evening of November 4, laying out their ideas on rebuilding trust. A meet-and-greet began at 5:30 p.m., followed by the forum at 6 p.m.; education news site Chalkbeat reported on the forum on November 6.

The vacancy arose when DJ Torres, who represented District 3 in central and east Denver, resigned. Of the original 13 applicants, one was disqualified for not living in the district, leaving 12. Torres said on resigning that the board spent too much time on 'internal conflict.' At the forum, the 12 applicants addressed board operations, relations with the community and how to restore public trust.

The next steps are set: the board will name three finalists on November 16 and make the appointment on November 19, with the new member serving a one-year term. The District 3 seat remains vacant in the meantime, and residents are watching whether the appointee can ease the board's internal tensions and restore public confidence.
