Boston Court Denies School District Injunction; English High Football Team Misses Playoffs

BOSTON, Mass. — Suffolk Superior Court Judge Gillian Feiner on November 6 denied Boston Public Schools' request for an injunction, confirming that the combined Boston English and New Mission high school football team will miss this season's playoffs. The dispute stems from an October 30 game between English and O'Bryant High School that Boston Public Schools failed to enter into the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association's scheduling platform by the MIAA's September 18 deadline.
Boston Public Schools argued the association had misapplied its own rules and that the game should count as a forfeit by the opponent, but the court did not agree. English finished 4-2 and did not reach the seven games required for playoff eligibility. The MIAA said it is aware of the ruling and that this week's playoffs will proceed as scheduled. English played a non-playoff game on November 5, losing 48-0 to a combined Pentucket-Georgetown team, and closes its season against Boston Latin at Harvard at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving.
