Follow-Up: Mamdani Blasts Google's School AI Rules; Schools That Ban AI Could Lose Search

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

NEW YORK — The public dispute between New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Google over school artificial-intelligence policy continued on November 6, centered on Google rules that could leave schools that ban AI without Google Search.

Google announced on its official blog that Gemini, NotebookLM, the classroom edition of Gemini and Google Search will be turned off by default for K-12 student accounts and must be re-enabled item by item by school administrators; Google has not yet announced a specific effective date. But because the AI Mode and AI Overviews built into Google Search cannot be switched off separately, schools that ban AI entirely will be unable to offer students search. Chris Phillips, Google's vice president for education, told The New York Times that students at schools that ban AI will not see the search function.

Mamdani posted on X accusing Google of trying to use its monopoly power to force AI on public schools. In a statement on X on Tuesday, November 3, Google said the new policy gives schools more choice, not less, and that schools can enable the three services item by item. New York City announced a plan in September to restrict AI use in schools. New York City public schools have already disabled Gemini and AI Mode on student Chromebooks, and the Department of Education says it is seeking details from Google on the policy.
