PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A 36-year-old foster mother, Carprice Williams, has been charged with murder and other offenses in the death of a 10-year-old foster girl from West Philadelphia. Williams was arraigned in the early hours of November 6 and ordered held without bail, with a preliminary hearing set for November 23, the Philadelphia district attorney's office announced on November 5. The charges include murder, endangering the welfare of a child, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.

The victim, Malayshia Alford (spelled differently in some prosecution materials), was last seen at her West Philadelphia home on October 22 and was reported missing on October 26, prompting a large search by police and the FBI. Investigators said surveillance video from the early hours of October 26 showed what appeared to be the girl's body being carried out of the home in a bag; that lead pointed to a witness, and on the night of November 4 police found the girl's body in the trunk of a car in Lindenwold, New Jersey, about 20 miles away. Prosecutors said she died of blunt-force injuries and the death was ruled a homicide.

Mayor Cherelle Parker said the city will keep investigating and seek justice for the girl. The Philadelphia school district confirmed Alford was a student at Robert E. Lamberson School. The case remains under investigation.
