PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A Pinellas County sheriff's deputy was arrested on the morning of November 5 on accusations that he misused license plate reader cameras to track his estranged wife; the case was reported by Tampa Bay media on November 6.

Deputy Ronald Scott is accused of using the law enforcement Flock license plate reader system to look up the movements of his estranged wife and her boyfriend. According to officials, Scott ran searches on the two more than 100 times beginning around Valentine's Day this year. Flock cameras across the Tampa Bay area automatically record the plates and locations of passing vehicles and are intended for law enforcement work.

The sheriff's office arrested Scott after discovering the alleged personal use of the system. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said the problem lay in how the technology was used, not in the technology itself. The office said the case will be handled according to law and that the deputy's duty status will be announced later.
